California (PRWEB) April 20, 2011

A recently launched company is looking to give back, encourage e-waste education and stimulate the electronics industry to reconsider its manufacturing materials. Ohmlop was founded on the premise of looking for a simple solution to the worlds’ fastest growing waste stream, e-waste, while acknowledging the need for digital age products that are earth-friendly.

To mark Earth Day on April 22, Ohmlop will donate $1 (5%) from every sale of its PVC-free connector cables for the rest of the month to the Basel Action Network (BAN). The company believes that BAN’s mission to end social injustices caused by the electronic waste trade is something everyone should be aware of.

“We were shocked by the massive amount of e-waste created by wealthy nations, the issues with PVC plastic, and by the devastating health and environmental problems caused by its disposal in places like Ghana and China,” says Ohmlop co-founder Kristian Rauhala. “A key goal for Ohmlop was to demonstrate that there are ways to manufacture accessories for digital devices that are less harmful to the planet.”

There is no easy way to remove PVC casings from cables. Instead, e-waste is often shipped to developing nations, where workers melt off the plastic to extract the valuable metals within, creating toxic fumes.

Ohmlop cables are designed to appeal to the digitally connected consumer and traveler who cares about the environment. “There are hundreds of millions of blogs, over 100 million digital cameras sold each year, and more than 300 million iPod devices out there,” says Ohmlop co-founder Mark Fewell. “Ohmlop cables can be used to help people share their stories, videos and photos, but without adding more PVC to the planet.”

Ohmlop wanted a better feel and a visual statement: its cables are insulated with braided cotton, which can easily be removed to extract the copper wiring, a highly recyclable metal. The cable-ends are made of recycled PET from used water bottles. Ohmlop offers USB sync cables for iPod®, iPhone® and iPad® devices, a USB to Mini cable, and a USB to micro cable.

E-waste is the fastest growing category of trash in the US. According a United Nations Environment Program report, the US generates over 3 million tons of unwanted electronics every year. It is estimated that 50-80 percent of the e-waste collected for recycling is exported to developing nations, a practice that is legal because the US has not yet ratified the Basel Convention.

Ohmlop connector cables are available at http://www.ohmlop.com. Ohmlop is a member of 1% For the Planet, and ships to carbon neutral to consumers thanks to Greenshipping.com.

Garden Grove, CA (PRWEB) April 20, 2011

Earth Friendly Products (http://www.ecos.com), a leader in manufacturing award-winning, eco-friendly cleaning products, will reward all of its employees on Earth Day with bonus checks and the day off in recognition of Earth Day on Friday, April 22.
More than 200 employees will receive checks for up to three weeks pay at the company’s five manufacturing facilities across the country.

“For our employees, every day is Earth Day,” exclaimed Van Vlahakis, founder and CEO of Earth Friendly Products. “What better way is there for our company to honor this special day than to give recognition and express our gratitude to all of the people we work with who are dedicated to making the world safer and cleaner for everyone? Their skills and devotion to making Earth Friendly Products successful and to producing our 100% natural cleaning products has made us a leader in our field. This is one way for us to say thank you and to let them know how very much we appreciate each and every one of them.”
Vlahakis said that the bonuses are designed to help employees financially and give an added boost to the local economies where the company’s five plants are located in Addison, Ill., Garden Grove, Calif., Lacey, Wash., Norwood, N.J. and Opa Locka, Fla. By producing products in different regions of the country, carbon emissions are reduced significantly due to the shortened shipping routes between Earth Friendly Products manufacturing centers and stores who sell these top-selling products. In addition, Vlahakis noted that the company plans to rely entirely on solar power at all of its manufacturing facilities by the close of this year.

Sustainability is of vital importance to Earth Friendly Products. The company recycles and reuses resources constantly, and its commitment to reducing dependence on fossil fuels, coal and nuclear power is genuine.

“It is critical for us as a nation to do everything we can to encourage steps that will cut down on and do away with our dependence on sources of energy that pollute our environment and place everyone’s health and welfare at risk,” said Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, Vice President of Earth Friendly Products. “In recognition of these national priorities, we recently announced our incentive program in which we will pay $2,000 to every Earth Friendly Products employee who purchases a hybrid, biofuel or electric car this year. Also, we will give 20% rebates on top of already-in-place state and federal tax incentives toward the purchase and installation of solar energy systems at employees’ primary residences. For every $10,000 they spend on solar, we will give them $2,000.”

Earth Friendly Products practices sustainability and uses alternative energy in manufacturing each of its award-winning green cleaning products. The company, which manufactures over 150 all-natural, toxin-free, green cleaning products, is committed to making a green lifestyle accessible for all families, through ongoing campaigns aimed at removing toxic chemicals from the home and partnerships with green organizations throughout the country, including Healthy Child Healthy World.

Novato, CA (PRWEB) April 20, 2011

SPG Solar Inc.®, the company that introduced the world’s first operational floating solar array in 2007, today announced the availability of its next generation in floating solar technology. Redesigned and engineered to be cost competitive, SPG Solar Floatovoltaics™ makes it possible for commercial, industrial and government users with little available rooftop or land space to float solar on water, providing triple benefits: energy savings, water savings and environmental benefits. Using proven and cost effective floating technology, fresh water irrigation ponds, lakes, or reservoirs become revenue-generating, power producing platforms.

“Floatovoltaics has changed the way solar power is now considered, making it an option where never before possible,” said SPG Solar CEO and President Chris Robine.” “Now, customers around the world can install a floating system that is priced competitively to ground based, single –axis tracking solar systems.”

When available open space is limited, Floatovoltaics provides a water-based solution. Where water is at a premium, the system offers significant conservation benefits:

Reduces water evaporation up to 70%,

Improves water quality by providing coverage from the sun that minimizes algae growth and reduces the need for harsh water treatment chemicals, and

Provides shade below the panels, lowering the water temperature and improving power output from the solar panels.

The Floatovoltaics power generating system works the same way as in all other solar photovoltaic (PV) installations. It is quality engineered for a system lifetime of 20+ years, features no moving parts and requires limited maintenance.

Floatovoltaics technology is anticipated to be particularly valuable for agribusinesses, water agencies, wastewater treatment facilities, and utilities; among other applications.

About SPG Solar
SPG Solar is a leading developer of distributed solar projects for large commercial, government and public energy users. Located in Novato, California, SPG Solar has been providing unique solar solutions to its customers for nearly a decade.

Australia, Melbourne, Victoria (PRWEB) April 20, 2011

Currently, the majority of the nutrients available in Australia are imported or foreign owned, and are not made to suit Australia’s water conditions, hence the EC and PH levels jump out in a matter of hours. Naked Nutrients seems to have solved this problem by using pure, Australian made ingredients that are tested for their quality before being incorporated into the incredible blends. The quality of the ingredients used is higher than those used in the leading hydroponic nutrient brands, hence a better final result.

Prestige Hydroponics, an online hydroponics distributor is now exclusively offering this premium nutrient formulation to their customers; before the product officially hits shelves throughout Australia. So what makes Naked Nutrients stand out in the crowded nutrient market in Australia? Frank of Naked Nutrients explains; “Naked Nutrients is made with ingredients sourced entirely from Australian suppliers. Naked is a 100% Australian owned and operated company, so the profits aren’t leaving this beautiful land of ours. We can offer the best price in the market because we keep our production costs low by removing unnecessary overheads and costly advertising campaigns other companies use to sell their products. We pass on these savings directly to our customers”.

Naked Nutrients offer a broad range of products such as Naked CoCo A&B, Naked Hydro Grow A&B Naked Hydro Bloom A&B, Super Naked Roots, Naked Uptake, Naked Mega Bulk, Naked Power Zyme, Naked Emergency and Big Naked Buds. The majority of hydroponic nutrient consumers in Australia are either Commercial Growers or Hobbyists. In this day and age of global warming, more and more people are turning to hydroponics for a consistent food supply all year round. Marcus, a hobby grower is one of the first to trial Naked Nutrients; he says “I have seen some of my best yields since I started trialing the Naked Nutrients product range. This product is up there with the likes of Canna and House & Garden, but what makes it brilliant is that it is 100% Aussie owned, not to mention the Ph level of my reservoir has never been so spot on in years”. Many independent hydroponic nutrient analysts have already given their thumbs up for the Naked Nutrients product range.

The future of the hydroponic world relies on companies like Naked Nutrients, companies that are involved in the hydroponics industry day and night, and know exactly what the growers really want.

If people want to purchase this product prior to it taking the hydroponic industry by storm (and possibly selling out within a matter of weeks), Prestige Hydroponics (an online store) is the only place you can buy it until it’s official release on May 20th 2011.

Finally, Aussies (and the rest of the world) can begin to see massive high yielding crops due to the hard work of the Naked Nutrients team.

For more information (or to stock this product in your own store, including stockists located in Europe, Canada, The USA, and Asia) please visit http://www.naked-nutrients.com

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) April 20, 2011

The inaugural Earth Day Dallas Festival, which will take place on April 22 and 23, 2011 in the Dallas Downtown Arts District, will feature activities, Eco Expos, and food trucks demonstrating the use and application of environment-friendly practices and lifestyles. This year, Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation’s leading competitive retail provider of cleaner energy and carbon offset solutions, will help Earth Day Dallas make an even greater impact on the environment.

Green Mountain is donating carbon offsets to match 100 percent of the estimated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the production of the event. Green Mountain will also sponsor the “Green Mountain Green Zone” to provide festival-goers with eco-friendly games; the chance to ride the bubble bike; have photos taken with Green Mountain’s mascot, Super Earth; demonstrations of alternative energy; and Wind Face, a new wind tunnel activity that enables attendees to experience the true power of wind.

“Year after year, Earth Day has been the biggest holiday at Green Mountain Energy Company and we are thrilled to partner with Earth Day Dallas to make this event even greener,” said Paul Markovich, president, Residential Services, Green Mountain Energy Company. “Green Mountain was founded with an environmental mission to ‘change the way power is made.’ This event helps us to fulfill our mission.”

David Crane, Chief Executive Officer of NRG Energy, Green Mountain’s parent company, will speak during the opening day of the Festival, Friday, April 22 from 12-1 p.m in the Chase Tower Rotunda at 2200 Ross Avenue. Two weeks ago in Dallas, NRG began its installation of the country’s first privately funded electric vehicle charging station network, eVgo. Crane will speak about how changes in the power and transportation sectors can help stop climate change.

Earth Day Dallas will track emissions from the venue hotel, meals, flights, and other travel. The carbon offsets are certified by Climate Action Reserve from New River Regional Landfill in Raiford, Florida. Landfill gas carbon offset projects benefit the environment by destroying methane gas that would otherwise have been vented into the atmosphere.

“My vision for Earth Day Dallas in its inaugural year is to plant seeds of environmental change locally. My goal is to create a forum for North Texas business, academic, and non-profit communities to share how they are living and working more sustainably and to spark meaningful dialogue,” said Trammell S. Crow, Founder of Earth Day Dallas. “An important part of our efforts this year is reducing the amount of carbon emissions our event will generate, and offsetting what we can’t reduce through our partnership with a local, Texas-grown company – Green Mountain Energy Company.”

“We will first attempt to reduce the amount of CO2 emissions produced at Earth Day Dallas by creating a Zero Waste event environment and working with our public transportation partner to encourage Earth Day Dallas attendees to ride DART. Then, we will rely on our partnership with Green Mountain to offset the rest,” said Tajana Mesic, sustainability advisor to Earth Day Dallas and managing director of Green Grove Group.

Green Mountain will be offsetting nearly 300 metric tons of CO2 this year at Earth Day Dallas. This is equivalent to:

Taking approximately 60 cars off the road for one year

The amount of CO2 absorbed by almost 40,000 trees in one year

Over 500 houses turning off their lights for a year

About Earth Day Dallas, Inc.
Earth Day Dallas kicks off on April 22, 2011, with a two-day festival in the Dallas Arts District. Events will focus on entertaining, inspiring, and educating Dallasites with various ways to think, work, and live green by showcasing emerging green technology, providing eco-friendly family activities, presenting enlightening lectures from environmental leaders, a variety of music and much more. Find out more at EarthDayDallas.org.

Keystone, CO (PRWEB) April 20, 2011

The Green Products Roundtable (GPR), a diverse group of some of the nation’s most influential green product manufacturers, certifiers, distributors, retailers, purchasers, and other stakeholders, announced the launch of a public campaign to end the use of false and misleading green product claims in the marketplace.

Dubbed the “Green Marketing Pledge,” the campaign offers participants the opportunity to publicly demonstrate their commitment to responsible environmental marketing including adherence to FTC’s revised Green Guides. GPR members who have signed the Pledge include 3M, The Ashkin Group, Big Room, Inc., Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer’s Association, DEKRA, Five Winds International, GreenGuard Environmental Institute, Office Depot, Overbrook Foundation, Santa Monica Office of Sustainability and the Environment, Shaw Industries, Inc., UL Environment, Unisource Worldwide, Inc., and Weyerhaeuser. The GPR aims to attract at least 100 additional organizations by December 2012.

“The idea behind the Pledge is simple,” said GPR member Scot Case, Director, Market Development at UL Environment. “This is a way to accelerate the use of existing and credible standards, while shining a light on those who are already doing the right thing.”

A company or organization that signs the Pledge vows to adhere to established guidelines ensuring the validity of its green marketing claims. It must also provide evidence to substantiate those claims.

“Weyerhaeuser takes its commitment to accurate and transparent environmental marketing claims very seriously” said Cassie Phillips, Vice President, Sustainable Forests and Products for Weyerhaeuser, one of the first major manufacturers to volunteer to participate in the campaign. “The Pledge is an effective way for our company to demonstrate that commitment.”

The act of signing the Pledge does not constitute a legally binding commitment or require a business to divulge any proprietary business information. Instead, it provides a mechanism for organizations to publicize their promise to make truthful, responsible environmental claims, and to encourage similar behavior among others in the industry. All signatories will be publicly displayed on the GPR website.

Peter Adler, president and CEO of The Keystone Center, a nonprofit organization that helped facilitate the creation of the Pledge, says companies that volunteer to participate help not only the environment and human health, but also themselves.

“Signing the Pledge indicates a willingness to take meaningful steps that contribute to a more responsible green marketplace,” Adler said. “It also creates an instant networking tool. Like-minded organizations will be placed on a list-serve that will provide useful information, as well as special invitations to participate in GPR projects and policy initiatives.”

To cover the administrate costs of maintaining and overseeing the campaign, each participant will be charged a $175 annual fee.

(PRWEB) April 20, 2011

In preparation for Earth Day 2011, Craig Scott Goldsmith, author of “Uninhabitable: A Case for Caution,” has sent an open letter to humanity and its leaders cautioning the detrimental effects of releasing Co2 into the atmosphere.

Goldsmith says humans are accelerating Co2 emissions through overpopulation, the use of automobiles and by building an abundance of new coal fire burning plants, which will bury the Kyoto treaty. He says the effects of global warming are evidenced by the extreme weather conditions humans are currently experiencing, including decade-long droughts, massive flooding in Australia and record breaking snowfalls in the eastern part of the United States.

“Global warming doesn’t mean it’s going to be warmer, it simply means a disruption in the normal weather patterns,” says Goldsmith.

Goldsmith warns that by continuing to inject more and more Co2 into the atmosphere, it will cause two very big problems for humanity:

Anoxia: The dramatic downward shift of the pH in our oceans, or oceanic acidification. “The oceans are absorbing so much Co2 from our modern lifestyle that they are becoming toxic and void of oxygen, creating dead zones around the world and putting oceans in jeopardy of collapsing within a few decades,” says Goldsmith.

Methane Hydrate: Methane is a greenhouse gas that is at least 26 times stronger than Co2. When released in large quantities it will spike temperatures very quickly from 4-16 degrees on average. Methane is stored in vast quantities in the frozen tundra of the Siberian lakes regions. If Co2 emissions continue to warm temperatures, it will melt the frozen tundra and release large quantities of methane into the atmosphere, spiking temperatures beyond our threshold to survive.

Goldsmith says that “Now is the time to step up and solve this problem while we still can, even if that means we must suspend democracy for a while to get the job done, just as we did during World War II. Or, we should step aside and let China, India or South America take the lead on the climate change issue.”

In his open letter he offers eight suggestions for reducing the threat of global warming:

1) Follow Princeton’s 15-point wedge program for reducing Co2 emissions.

2) Look into any geoengineering solution that will reduce Co2 or scrub it from the air. “We can find ways to stimulate the Earth’s natural systems to sequester Co2 by planting trees or stimulating Co2-eating algae blooms,” Goldsmith says.

3) Set aside one-third of the oceans for the regeneration of marine life and look for ways to reduce or reverse oceanic acidity.

4) Put up a 500 million dollar prize for scientists who can find solutions to arresting or solving the climate change problem.

5) Encourage or provide tax incentives to families who have no more than one or two children until there is solution and sustainability plan in place.

6) Put an immediate moratorium on any new coal fire burning plants that do not have the technology to capture its Co2 emissions.

7) Switch over to electric cars and solar energy and do not allow out-dated technology to be transferred to third world countries, which would simply transfer the pollution to a new location.

8) Suspend debate and even democracy if necessary until the science community gives an indication that we are making progress in the right direction. “We did not debate the Manhattan Project, nor the Normandy invasion. Our leaders knew what had to be done and got on with it. That is why we elected them, to keep us safe and out of harm’s way. Our president has the power; he must use it for the sake of humanity,” Goldsmith concludes.

About Craig Scott Goldsmith
Craig Scott Goldsmith, president of Prevention Insurance, has spent a decade looking at the Climate Change problem from the risk assessment perspective of the insurance industry, evaluating all the risks associated with global warming and rising Co2. He is a Harvard Business School graduate and author of several books including “Uninhabitable: A Case for Caution” available at Barnes & Noble.

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) April 20, 2011

The derivation of the word “Sustainability”– in Latin, sustinere – translates into “holding up”. Recently, we’ve all had quite a bit trouble with “holding up” against the stream of economic problems, failings of institutional and financial structures and environmental threats. Nobody knows these better than the small business owner. Maintaining enthusiasm for owning a business, working with customers and contributing to the community seems to require sometimes Herculean strength.

One way to boost optimism is to look for ways to help and to serve. There’s some area where everyone can contribute, no matter how small or large, that creates magic for all.

Two small businesses owners, separated by hundreds of miles, decided independently to raise the awareness of the dangers of the conventional textile industry. After learning that the conventional cotton crop is one of the biggest consumers of cancer-producing insecticides and pesticides – polluting soil, waters, and damaging cotton workers’ health – Alina Bartell, the owner of Natural ClothingCompany of Snohomish, WA decided to promote eco-friendly and skin-friendly clothing. Today, many of her clients are people whose skin sensitivity does not even let them wear the conventional textiles.

At the same time Dallas Fairbanks in Lake Tahoe, California has always been an avid supporter of environmental protection and a lover of nature. The desire to help both the earth and its people led her to establish her own store,Element Eco Wear, which also carries beautiful, environmentally safe organic clothing and over the time has developed a large clientele.

Both of these stores carry only planet friendly textiles made with organic and natural fibers. Their clothing is fashionable and fun, but also eco-friendly and safe for the environment. All items are made from fibers like organic cotton, hemp—which does not require chemicals to grow—or organically grown bamboo. The owners have a strong purpose in helping their area and are involved in organizing this week’s Earth Day events in their communities.

But the search for sustainability and better practices does not end with textiles. These green businesses see the necessity of the business environment to embrace cultural and social changes, as well. They see that caring about us all and looking over the long term proves true to the “we are all in it together” mantra. Working together has a long record of workability, so instead of competing these two store owners decided to network together—despite the fact that their stores are “competitors” in a traditional sense, operating mainly online and directed at a similar public. Both stores are popular and well placed in the e-commerce industry, and both carry similar types of clothing. But still, they decided to help each other.

When Element Eco Wear was short of stock, Dallas asked Natural Clothing Company for help. Alina shipped the order to the customer and a new relationship was born. Ever since, both companies exchange ideas, information and tips on succeeding in business, and even share promotions together. It helps to reduce costs and proves to be a fantastic network to compare notes. The owner’s common purpose strengthens the meaning of cooperation, working together instead of against each other. After all, who else understands your business better than your competitor?

You can find the businesses at http://www.NaturalClothingCompany.com; http://Facebook.com/NaturalClothingCo and http://www.ElementEcoWear.com.
